At Tekvocation, we believe that growth is shaped by both skills and perspective. As part of our Intern Enrichment Initiative, a special session was held toward the end of the internship, featuring former Tekvocation interns who are now full-time professionals at Edcite. The session offered current interns a chance to hear honest reflections on transitioning from internship to full-time roles.
Hosted by Diana, the conversation felt more like a casual catch-up than a formal panel, which allowed real stories to surface and made the space feel easy and relatable.

Brunda, known for her consistency, was asked what inspired her perfect attendance during the internship. She said, “I felt every day mattered. I didn’t want to miss a chance to learn something new.” Her message was simple—being present and open to learning can leave a lasting impression.

Ahmed brought in a different perspective. From the very beginning, his communication stood out. Asked about his professional-sounding application email, he said, “I wanted every part of my application to reflect how seriously I took the opportunity.” His attention to detail reminded everyone that how we present ourselves, even in the smaller moments, matters.

Pavan spoke about how he found his footing after a difficult start. “I struggled at first, but I kept trying. I asked for help, stayed back after sessions, and over time, I began to improve.” His experience reminded the group that growth takes time, and that persistence, along with support, can make all the difference.

Bharat shared a more introspective view, speaking about the importance of staying committed to one’s own path. “Stick to what you believe in,” he said. “Don’t compare yourself too much.” His words were a steady reminder to trust the process and focus on what feels right for you.

Abhishek shared practical insights on professionalism. “Say what you mean, be clear, and be open to helping others,” he said. His thoughts reinforced that communication, when done with intention and clarity, strengthens collaboration.

Vinutha, a working mother of two, spoke about balancing responsibilities at home and work. With planning and a calm approach, she stays committed to both. Her journey brought a thoughtful perspective on managing multiple roles with care and self-awareness.

Each speaker brought a different lens, shaped by their own experiences. Their stories gave current interns something valuable to reflect on as they prepare for their next steps.

  • Can you share some of the most significant trends in JavaScript development that professionals should pay attention to in 2024?
    Most professionals are aware by now that there is an increasing utilization of JavaScript in modern application development. Many would certainly agree with me that most frontend technologies are built on, built around, and rely heavily on JavaScript. Therefore, knowledge of JavaScript is a must for core technical resources, especially for those who wish to build their careers in modern frontend technologies.

  • How do you approach teaching JavaScript to individuals with minimal programming experience?
    Always start with something familiar to them. Everyone has some experience with the web. Initially, I introduce the basics of HTML and CSS, as they can relate to their experience with web usage, particularly with web forms. Then, I pose questions like, "What element is missing?" Most people quickly realize that interactivity is missing. I start with basic built-in methods like prompt and alert. Gradually, they understand the need for validation, and I teach them that. Once they get a feel for JavaScript, the learning process becomes smoother.

  • What are the most common challenges developers face when working with JavaScript, and how can they overcome them?
    Debugging is a common bottleneck developers face. Unlike some other programming languages, JavaScript lacks a quick debugging mechanism—or perhaps I’m unaware of one. That said, modern browsers have amazing developer tools that can greatly assist in debugging.

  • In your experience, how has AI impacted the way we develop and interact with software applications? What do you think the future holds for AI in software development and education?
    I feel AI is undoubtedly a boon for education. We’ll all have to wait and experience its full potential ourselves.

  • With cybersecurity becoming increasingly important, how can developers ensure their JavaScript applications are secure?
    Cybersecurity is critical, as we’re all aware. JavaScript can be used to identify client-side vulnerabilities and to implement client-side authentication and authorization, which enhances overall security.

  • What are some hobbies or interests outside of work that help you unwind and maintain perspective?
    I’m naturally curious about technologies and trends—I enjoy learning about them for the sake of knowing. Reading is a hobby I cherish most, and today, we have various media to facilitate that.

  • Looking back, what’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learned from teaching and consulting in the tech industry?
    The need to stay updated with technological advancements is crucial, especially in IT. It’s even more important if you’re teaching technology.

An exclusive interview with Mr. Francis, a distinguished professional with extensive cross-industry experience. Mr. Francis shares insights on navigating economic and technological shifts, essential career principles, and valuable advice for young professionals.

(i) Across the industries you've worked in, what are some core principles or skills that have remained constant throughout your career?

The basic principles that have remained constant throughout my career are reading, writing, and quantitative skills. These fundamental skills are essential and beneficial across various industries.

(ii)  What are some of the biggest economic and technological disruptions you've witnessed in your career?

My career began in 1978, a time when mainframes were giving way to microcomputers. I started at HCL, where we were among the first to introduce microprocessor-based computers to Indian businesses. In the mid-90s, PCs started becoming popular, with companies like Microsoft gaining prominence. Around the same time, the movement of software work to Bangalore began, with companies like Motorola and Infosys setting up operations. Interestingly, I worked on AI and neural networks in the late 80s and early 90s, which seemed to fizzle out but have now come back strongly. For me, it's a bit of déjà vu seeing the same concepts gain traction again.

(iii) What are some of the most valuable life lessons you've learned throughout your career?

Having worked in many different companies, I've learned that people are fundamentally different, and it's crucial to be flexible in dealing with them. Early in my career, I worked on a project with Japanese colleagues and thought all Japanese people were exceptionally good. Later, I realized that it wasn't so with others, and it's not right to generalize. Flexibility is the most valuable life lesson I've learned.

(iv) Looking back, what skills or experiences from your early career proved most valuable in your later endeavors?

The quality of education I received has been incredibly valuable. I attended IIT, where both the faculty and the students were exceptional. This rigorous academic environment helped me build a strong foundation that has benefited me throughout my career.

(v) If you could give one piece of advice to someone considering a career in the tech industry, what would it be?

It's useful to study materials by industry leaders and not just rely on courses from platforms like Coursera or Udemy. For example, if you're learning Node.js, look into the work of Ryan Dahl, its author. For JavaScript, study the contributions of Brendan Eich and Douglas Crockford. Crockford, who is also the creator of JSON, has a highly recommended 1.5-hour YouTube video. Understanding the history and culture behind these technologies provides valuable context and depth.

(vi) What foundational skills or knowledge do you believe are essential for success in today's job market?

Francis: Foundational skills such as mentioned above - reading, writing, and quantitative skills are essential. Also a deep subject knowledge of a given technology while gaining an understanding of the history behind those specific technologies you are working with can offer a richer perspective.

(vii) Looking back, what advice would you give to your younger self?

I would advise my younger self to learn more human languages. While I have experience with over 30 programming languages, I only speak one spoken language. Knowing multiple spoken languages would have enriched my experiences and interactions with people.

(viii) Can you recommend any books or resources that have influenced your professional life?

For those in the tech industry, I recommend books by Douglas Crockford, Brendan Eich, and Ryan Dahl. For the new generation that is addicted to the social media, "In-distractable" by Nir Eyal is an excellent book on maintaining focus in a world full of distractions. While Nir Eyal's book - "Hooked," provides insights on how to develop products that keep users engaged, and he also gave a notable Google Talk on this topic. In his next book, ironically he speaks on how to not get distracted. 

Francis concluded with:

It's essential to maintain focus whether you're in a meeting or working on a task. Many today are constantly distracted over various notifications and are visibly distracted. While distractions are everywhere, especially with the prevalence of social media, staying focused is crucial for success.

 Tekvocation, though established in 2019, embodies a vision Tony had nurtured long before. His vision went beyond simply hiring young talent. The dream of fostering the young talent from the old city of Mysuru through extended internships, rather than simply hiring them, had been brewing for quite some time

 As our founder, and that of numerous other organizations, many of us have always wondered: where did it all begin? To many - Tony, a humble man dedicated to his ideas, is known for his unwavering commitment and punctuality. But if you'd ask us, we would say, what truly sets him apart is the effortless simplicity with which he carries the weight of his achievements. This article seeks to unravel the details of his entrepreneurial spirit, exploring the inspirations that ignited his passion and the strong work ethic that fuels his tireless pursuit of success. Let's delve into the mind of the man behind it all

(i)What initially sparked your interest in technology and entrepreneurship?

I was an avid reader in school, and particularly in college, was inspired by books I read about inventions and engineering advances. When I started learning engineering I was very motivated by the idea of building new products that are useful to people. I realized then that I would be happiest working on new technology and building products. It was only years later, after learning more and working on many projects, that I would get the opportunity to do that. After working as an engineer for a few years, I found a way to build a new product that was useful to the company I was working at. Later I left to start a new company.

(ii)What were some of the biggest technological challenges you faced in the companies that you've established ? Can you share a story about a time your company overcame a significant challenge?

Technology challenges vary a lot, though the biggest technical challenges tended to be around getting unproven technology to work well enough for customers in a timely way. When doing something new, it is hard to predict how long it will take for a team to get it done. And after showing customers a working prototype or early version, they want a commitment on a fully working product within a reasonable timeframe. That can be challenging for startups, requiring huge effort from a small team. One case I remember is when our delivery was delayed and our customer, a Japanese manufacturer, even threatened to sue us, probably just to increase pressure on us to complete the delivery. Fortunately, meetings to assure them we're doing everything possible, and overcoming the technical challenges soon after, put us back on a good wicket with that customer.

(iii) Can you describe the process any company goes through to develop and launch new technologies?

There are countless ways to develop and launch new products, and each company tends to favor pathways that work for them and their industry. For technology startups, releasing early versions, and finding and satisfying early customers, is a common pathway. Those early customers must be driven by something you can offer that they are not already getting from their existing suppliers. So essential for your offering to have a beneficial technology edge, or cost advantage, or other advantage like saving customers time and effort. So the process for many startups involves understanding a customer need or beneficial technology change, building an early version, and finding early customers for it.

(iv) In the product companies that you have established,How do you gather user feedback to ensure your technology meets evolving needs of the users? Could you share some instances.

Finding early customers to validate your product-market fit, as it is known these days, is an important element for most startups in their journey. That can be a hard challenge in many cases, and there is often no substitute for calling on customers and selling them the benefits of your offering. For online products, digital marketing can bring in early users and customers, and often companies offer free versions or trials to ease that path. Understanding the early customer experience, and making changes to offer the best possible customer experience, is a key factor for success. Getting insights from early users takes more effort with online users, and should go beyond support requests from customers. Speaking to these early users, and finding other ways to understand and observe their use of your products, is the source of these insights that should drive your product evolution. And on an ongoing basis, your product needs to evolve based on the changes in technology, competition, and customer types and use cases. As an example, I have visited elementary school classrooms in the US to see how teachers might use our tools in a room full of noisy children. That visit gave me new appreciation for how ease of use is critical in that busy environment. 

(v) How has the competitive landscape changed since your company's inception? What are your thoughts on the potential impact of technological advancements such as AI/ChatGPT on society and the workforce?

There have been tremendous changes since I first started a company, including rapid technological change, a surge in the number of startups in every industry, rise in costs in many areas, along with many conveniences and great tools for entrepreneurs. The wide availability of deep technical knowledge in many areas, along with AI tools to help any motivated entrepreneur more easily get to a first version of their offering, makes this an exciting time for young people to pursue building new technology and products that they are passionate about. I'm hopeful that a number of our young people will be motivated by technology advancements and get deep into building this technology in India, which can benefit tremendously from creating new homegrown products, rather than importing them. If that happens, we can expect a lot of benefits to society, including improved standard of living and conveniences. I'm not concerned about AI impacting jobs, if we're able to create new technologies that improve lives and lower the use and waste of scarce resources. There are risks of imbalances and poor policies that create excess debt burdens and external dependencies. I'm hopeful that smart policies will encourage a balance of production and consumption for a healthy local economy not burdened with excess debt. In such a scenario, we need not fear job losses to AI and automation, as some new industry or technological change opens up new opportunities.

(vi) What book(s) on technology or business would you recommend to our readers?

There are of course many good books to read based on your interests, so I find it hard to recommend one book for readers. When I was studying engineering, I read The Soul of a New Machine by Tracy Kidder, which inspired my interest in building technology products. That book is still recommended by many lists on good books for engineers, though I have not read it recently and it may be a little dated. A book with wide interest to engineers or others involved with all kinds of products is The Design of Everyday Things by Don Norman. There are excellent books on entrepreneurs like Jobs, Musk, etc. that may be suitable for many readers. I encourage looking at lists of recommended books on technology, and picking based on your specific interests.

(vii) Looking back, is there anything you would have done differently when starting your first started your own firm?

With the benefit of hindsight, there are many things over the years I could have done to improve the future outcomes for my company and everyone involved. It's important to accept there will be flawed decisions and mistakes in your projects and career, and no one gets everything right. What is most important is to continually learn and course correct when you discover something is not working. When something is working okay but needs to be improved, that takes more effort to change, but is often worth that difficult push to change. Looking back at each new product I was closely involved in creating, I see many specific changes that could have made a big difference. One example of a change I would make is to improve communication and feedback between all stakeholders, particularly early customers. Too often engineers are busy building, and don't think as hard about communicating with all other stakeholders. That needs to be made a priority and sufficient time allocated for it.
